A precise figuration with hints of the metaphysical; authentic multi-layered paintings and drawings primarily dedicated to humanity and silence awakening restlessness and inquisitiveness in any viewer, are all part of the latest cycle of paintings by Đerđi Ačaji, a young painter from Novi Sad. The confidence and clarity of the artist’s expression arise from an unusual combina-tion of Renaissance heritage, modern tendencies, precise, clear drawing and a faith-fulness to the human figure. Magic realism, that is, the continuity of interest for that which is both figurative as well as metatemporal, is evident in Đerđi’s paintings in which narratives are de-veloped in a unique way. The artist has a penchant for the lyrical and the topic of alienation in the contemporary world — something that is best reflected in her refined drawings. Although the main protagonists of the artist’s paintings are people who constantly interact with the world, we barely notice them, seeing that silence and a strange peace reign on Ačaji’s drawings and paintings. These protagonists are most often musicians, but also fishermen, tailors, chefs, shoemakers — people we don’t notice passing by, seemingly invisible, seemingly fragile and destructible, but still strong, important, honest and emphatic. These are the characters anyone can identify with. In her last cycle of works, Đerđi is still dedicated to depicting personality which can be interpreted and read in various ways. These are the portraits of old men with remarkable piercing eyes, big ears, lips pressed together, who wisely see, feel and know everything but are at the same time mute and helpless. Serenity, well-grounded optimism, unpretentiousness and strong beliefs — these are the guiding stars of the young artist of a specific sensibility — Đerđi Ačaji who is trying to right the wrongs that were done to these seemingly invisible men.
